Events that Put Shimoda in the History Books
On display are objects related to the American and Russian delegations that sailed to Shimoda in the mid-19th century. The U.S. fleet was lat by Commodore Matthew C.Perry and the Russian fleet by Admiral Evfimii Vasil'evich Putyatin . The annex across the street offers a glimpse intosize Shimoda folklorse and traditions, including a life-sized procession reproducing the excitement of the midsummer Drum Festival of the Hachiman Shrine.

Commodor Perry's First Stop in Shimoda
In 1854, the Shogun's gowernment signed a treaty that opened the ports
of Shimoda and Hakodate (in northernmost Hokkaido) to U.S. ships. Part
of that treaty was signed at the tample. The Holl of Treasure houses a
rich collection of scrolls and prints depicting often amusing first encounters
between Japanese and foreigners . There is also a series of paintings illustrating
the legend of Okichi.In May, the entire place becomes suffused in the intoxicating
flagrance of American Jasmine flowers.

Treaty That Opened Japanese Ports to Russia
In autumn 1854, Admiral Putyatin of the Imperial Russian Navy sailed into
Shimoda Bay seeking to open relations with Japan. Overcoming setbacks caused
by a giant tidal wave that wrecked Putyatin's ship Diana, the Japan-Russia
Treaty of Peace and Amity was signed here in February 1855. |

Great View of the Harbor and Open Seas
Site of Ujima Castle sacked in 1590 during a period of violent civil war
among samurai warlords . Only a few sings of the castle remain in what
is now a park with a winding path offering great views of Shimoda Harbor
and the ocean . Millions of colorful hydrangea bloom througtout the rainy
season in June. Visitors can also enjoy 160 types of camellia during a
Festival in early March. |

Tribute to Japan-U.S. Frendship
Built in 1954 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japan's opening of
relation with America. The monument is decorated with relief images and
the words of Commodore Perry and Townsend Hrris.Perry began the talks that
ended Japan's Closed Door policy and Harris opened the first U.S. Consulate
at Gyukusenji Temple. |

Site where Commodore Perry lended in 1854.THe Japanese called his fleet of steamships the Black Ships,because of their ominous color and the smoke they spewed out.Perry and his 300men marched along Hiraname River to Ryuosenji Temple and onto Kakisaki.
