Izu city is located in eastern Shizuoka prefecture, at roughly the center of Izu Peninsula. Izu is blessed with water and greenery along the Kano River, with the view of Suruga Bay to the west. In this beautiful costline and mountain setting, the city sites. The major tourist spots are the famous novel "The Dancer of Izu" by Yasunari Kawabata; Joren Waterfall; historic Shuzenji Temple and Tokko-no-yu; Niji-no-sato and the flowers of each season; view of Mount Fuji and the sunset from Lovers Point in Toi; the majestic mountains of Amagi; Hatchou Lake in the ridge of the mountains; and other scenic spots.
The leading local produce are the wasabi ( Japanese horseradish) that is recognized for both the production output and quality and shiitake mushrooms. White loquats are also being cultivated. Liqueurs, cuicines, preserves and other products taste outstanding. Snacks and meals prepared with fresh seafood from Suruga Bay are superb.


Nature

Bamboo Forest Path
A scenic pedestrian walkway along the Katsura River, surround by tall bamboo trees. The walkway is a plesant path with a tea shop, vermillion-colored bridge and large bamboo bench at the center of the forest where visitors can rest and enjoy the scenery. Beyound the forest is a photo gallery showing works capturing the beauty of the seasons in Shuzenji.




Banjo Waterfall
The waterfall that is 20m high and 6m wide is located up the Jizoudou River, a tributary of the Kano River. In the past, Visitors were able to go and see the fall from behind. Camping grounds and wasabi (Japanse horseradish) paddies surrounded by greenery are nearby, offering visitors a refreshing, relaxing experience.





Wasabi Paddies
Naka-Izu is the foremost center of wasabi (Japanese horseradish) production in Japan. Because wasabi requires rich natural surroundings and clean, clear water for cultivation, the wasabi paddies that stretch over mountain slopes offer a magnificent view. Wasabi harvest experiences are offered to visitors.







Jouren Waterfall
Thr waterfall, which has been selected on of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan, is the most scenic waterfall of Izu, surraunded by the natural forest of Amagi and measuring 25m high and 7m wide. The basalt rocks of the water fall are aldo the natural habitat of the chain fern Woodwaedia unigemmata, a oritected soecies. A trout pond is at the bottom of the waterfall, and Amagi's famous wasabi paddies soread along the stream.

Conted among the top 100 mountains of Japan, the mountain offres a variety of ambiences each season and enjoyment for the serious hiker.





Culture


Shuzen-ji Temple
Founded by Koubou Daishi in 807 A.D., the temple is located at the heart of Shuzenji Spa. Its principal statue of the seated Buddha is designated Important Cultural Property by the Japanese goverment. It is also known as the setting for the tragic imprisonment and assassination of Minamoto no Yoriie, the second shogun of the Kamakura shogunate.







Old Amagi Tunnel
The old Amagi Tunnel was built in 1904. It was part of the Shimoda Route that extends north-south across Izu Peninsula and has been designated Important Cultural Property. It is also widely known as the setting for "The Dancer of Izu," a book be Nobel Laureate Yasunari Kawabata. The road that the dancer traveled in the book has been renovated as a pedestrian walkway, the Odoriko Trail. Many people, including fans of the book, are able to enjoy the setting of the book while walking the trail. Another famous author, Tasushi Inoue, spent his childhood in Yugashima Hot Spring and wrote "Shirobamba" eith the hot spring town ad the setting. In the town, the smallpaths that local residents used in the past to visit public bathhouses were restored as yu-michi (hot spring paths).






Hot spring


Tokko-no-yu
A hot spring along the bank of the Katsura River that is the symbol of Shuzenji Spa, where in the past people used to bathe. Legend has that the great Buddhist monk and teacher Koubou Daishi, when seeing a child washing the back of an ill father, was greatly moved by the sight and cracked a rock on the bank with the vajra ("Tokko" in Japanese), a holy Buddhist implement, from which a hot spring came out. This is the oldest hot spring in Izu.

Izu Winery Chateau T.S
The winery surrounded by grape wineyards produces 12types of wines and offers tours to visitors. The structure built in Naoa Valley style has a free wine tasting room, open-air terrace cafeteria, California-style restaurant, California wine collection room (sampling available with carge), barbecue garden zone, and other spots of interest.






Amagi boar village
The world's only recreational park created on the theme of boars, offering stunt shows and raves by boars, as well as souvenir goods, Boar meat meals are offered at the restaurant.





Niji-no-sato (Rainbow country)
The 50-hectare park sits in a scenic environment and offers visitors enjoyments, such as a ateam locomotive running through the grounds and cultural zones such as an English village, Canadian village, Japanese garden, and Izu village.









Cycle Sports Center
The sports center offers a wide range of biking experiences, from a 5-km curcyut and mountain bike course for serious cyclists to rides on unique and amusing bicycles such as bicycles for four and pedal-less bikes

Toi Gold Mine
The site of what Izu's largest gold mine, which was a working mine for roughly 400years. The mine tunnels wxtend move than 100kilometers in total length. Parts of the tunnels have been used to recreate how gold was excavated in the Edo Period. The local heritage museum offers historical documents on the gold mine and displaysthe world's largest gold nugget (250kg). Visitors can also exoerience gold panning and dine in the restaurant.



Sports

Toi beach
As the largest swimming area on the western coast o Izu Peninsula, the beach offers safe swimming with its quite waters, a wide stretch of sallow water and lifeguards to watch swimmers. Facilities are extensive, indluding eateries, free showers and locker rooms.

Eco-tourism Oomi-no-sato Kitara
Eco-tourism is thriving in Naka-Izu, offering visitors farm stay experiences. This facility is an eco-tourism base where visitors are able it find information on stay programs. This is also a tofu production and sales center that offers tofu-making workshops to visitors.
